She has already caused uproar among Margaret Thatcher's family and dedicated supporters for her role in The Iron Lady.
And now Meryl Streep has stirred the pot at the Golden Globes as she thanked England for letting her 'trample over their history' in her film about the former British Prime Minister, The Iron Lady.
She made the comment in her speech as she accepted the best actress award.
The film and Meryl's portrayal of the former British Prime Minister has been severely criticized, including by members of her family. One family member, who wished to remain anonymous, has been quoted as saying the film was a 'Left-wing fantasy' designed to cast doubt on her political legacy.
Friends of Lady Thatcher, now 86, were said to be repulsed at the film because it shows her having nightmares about the miners’ strike and the Falklands War.
And viewers who were invited to an early screening of the film were disappointed at the way that it mocks her frail condition in her recent years with one having called it ‘insulting.'
American Meryl's casting was also criticized, with critics saying a Brit would have been better suited.
But as usual, 'people on the street' who have seen the film give it a five star rating. "This was clearly the best performance of Meryl's career" said one movie goer.
Meryl is tipped to win Best Actrss at the upcming Oscars.
