Album Review - Paul McCartney: Kisses On The Bottom

Like me you may be wondering why Sir Paul decided to cover a whole lot of old songs for his 16th solo project; since it’s been five years since the last one.. If you get the CD, the booklet includes an interview with the man himself answering many of the questions I was pondering, like so many variations of the big one: why? In short, he was thinking about the songs his parents and their friends used to sing around the piano when he were a lad.

Amongst his versions of old songs of the 1930s are a couple of new ones. The Disney sounding album closer Only Our Hearts features Stevie Wonder on harmonica, while track eight is also a new composition, written by Paul while he on holiday in Mexico – on Valentine’s Day (hence the title). He played it as he wrote it on the hotel foyer piano while a couple of waiters cleared tables (oh to be a fly on that wall!), then asked Eric Clapton to play acoustic guitar on it for the recording. That means it was written exactly a year ago!

The song before that sounds like something Michael Buble would do. The album title Kisses On The Bottom is a line from the opening song I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, I think it’s the best song on the album.

This is a great jazz album. It’s quiet, soft and intimate. There’s brush work on the drums and gentle piano playing. Paul described it as an “album you listen to at home after work, with a glass of wine or a cup of tea” and I completely agree.
