I heard once that they met in a lift. The real story on their first encounter is revealed in the liner notes of this eighteen track best of collection. Daryl Hall and John Oates could do no wrong from then on, especially when it came to songs like Rich Girl, Private Eyes, I Can’t Go For That, Maneater and Out Of Touch. I found myself turning the volume up when these songs came on. In 1985 Daryl said “I think we’re the eighties’ Beatles. There’s something about our personalities that is very Lennon McCartney.” And he truly believed that. Comparisons and egos aside, they were very good. Not all their songs have stood the test of time. Those 80s synths and high pitched guitar solos sound dated on lesser-known tracks like Family Man. But straight after that comes Say It Isn’t So, and up goes the volume again. Other songs sound like they were written after listening to Queen albums of the day, but on the whole they have their own thing going on. This is perfect for anyone who’s seeing them at a Day On The Green this weekend.
