Subfertility in men is reported to account for around 25-30% of all infertility cases and many of the cases are what are caused idiopathic – they don’t know what is causing it.
Using nutrients to improve such problems is not new in the nutritional world. For example we have known for many yearsthat Zinc is well known to improve sperm count and healthy sperm. And Vitamin E is also needed for adequate sperm count, with a deficiency possibly leading to a total lack of sperm.
Scientific research over the last few year backs up these nutritional theories now too.
A recent study from Austria, published in December 2011, showed that a combination supplement, taken for 3 months by 132 sub fertile men, resulted in improvements in sperm quality by up to 215%.
The group taking the supplement was also associated with higher rates of conception, with 34 pregnancies reported during the 6 months that followed the study, compared to 11 in the control group.
The supplementcontained L-carnitine, L-arginine, zinc, vitamin E, glutathione, selenium, coenzyme Q10 and folic acid. These nutrients are all associated with improved sperm production.
The results showed significant improvements in the sperm quality of the participants and a larger, more through double blind, placebo controlled study is now underway.
