A recent study completed in Poland using extracts from NZ Green Lipped Mussels, published in the Journal of Rheumatology, has found that taking a daily dose of 1.2grams lead to better joint mobility and reduced pain in the subjects.
Those taking the daily dose of green lipped mussel extract found after 12 weeks they had significantly less pain, greater joint mobility and no side effects. It was a small study of only 25 participants but it does reinforce other larger studies that have been done in the past on those with arthritis.
The extract from green Lipped mussels contains naturally high levels of chondroitin which alone has been successfully studied for reducing the pain and inflammation of arthritis.
The study used the product Lyprinol which is readily available in NZ. The dosage from the study was 8x 150mg capsules to get a total of 1.5grams.
The polish researchers divided 50 people into two groups and one received Lyprinol and other fish oil. They found that those in the fish oil group reported no pain relief or increased joint mobility.
But this is because the dosage was too low – it only amounted to 1.2 grams of fish oil. This is sub-therapeutic for conditions such as arthritis. You need to take 6000mgs a day to get results, or less if you get a concentrated capsule.
